Assistant Director - Centers for Learning Excellence

South Texas College

The Assistant Director of the Centers for Learning Excellence is responsible for working closely with the Director of the Centers for Learning Excellence (CLE) in developing, implementing and evaluating departmental services. This position assists the CLE Director in daily administration of CLE services and long-range planning as directed or assigned, and supervises assigned CLE staff.

1-Collaborates closely with the CLE Director to develop, implement, and evaluate the department’s procedures, programs, functions, and activities.

2-Collaborates with the CLE Director on coordination of training, mentoring, and advising for departmental staff to develop and maintain professional growth.

3-Collaborates with the CLE Director on grant applications as well as implementation, management, and reporting associated with grant-funded projects.

4-Works with the CLE Director to maintain credentialing through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) and the Association of Colleges for Tutoring and Learning Assistance (ACTLA), and other relevant certifications.

5-Works with the CLE Director to prepare appropriate budget and staffing plan requests to meet anticipated needs of the CLE. Assists with managing the budget for the department with fiscal responsibility and accountability.

6-Facilitates workflow and communication between offices and departments within and beyond the division, including disseminating information, managing communications, and evaluating feedback.

7-Assists with establishing departmental procedures consistent with Board-approved policies.

8-Assists CLE Director in the development of Institutional Effectiveness Plans and reports, Comprehensive Operational Plans and reports, and other departmental strategic planning efforts and reports as assigned.

9-Prepares and coordinates the preparation of periodic and special reports, including monthly and weekly activity reports, financial reports, usage and impact data reports, departmental program evaluations, and other reports as assigned.

10-Serves as primary liaison with the CLE’s online tutoring platform vendor, with particular responsibility for tracking and reporting service interruptions, bugs, and feature requests.

11-Maintains access to a remote working site that is safe and free from interruptions, and to equipment and reliable internet connection sufficient to perform job duties remotely as required.

12-Prepares and presents oral and written reports.

13-Trains, evaluates and supervises assigned staff.

14-Travels throughout the college district as needed.

15-Serves as a Campus Security Authority.

16-Performs other duties as assigned.

Instructional Programs - Student Learning Assistance Center

POSITION OVERVIEW
The Assistant Director of Instructional Programs in the Student Learning Assistance Center (SLAC) 
is responsible for the management and supervision of SLAC’s nationally recognized Supplemental 
Instruction (SI) program, working with a diverse student staff of approximately 50 per semester, as 
well as SLAC’s Outreach and instructional
programs. SLAC Outreach includes oversight of collaborative work on behalf of the department such 
as New Student and Family Orientation and Bobcat Welcome Week while Instructional Programs includes 
responsibility for SLAC’s workshop menu serving faculty, staff, and student organizations. The 
Assistant Director functions as part of SLAC’s professional staff team maintaining a productive and 
collaborative learning environment and participating in the
creation, implementation, and evaluation of training programs and departmental policies and 
procedures.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES OVERVIEW
•  Assist the Director of SLAC with strategic planning and implementation of program goals and 
objectives regarding staffing, facilities, services, funding/budget, etc.
•  Maintain and/or expand SI program by consulting with Director, SI Coordinator - STEM, selected 
deans, departmental chairs, faculty members, and staff. Supervise SI Coordinator’s implementation 
of SI program. Supervise and participate in selection of Graduate Assistant and Undergraduate 
Senior Leadership.
•  Supervise and participate in training initiatives including SI Leader training and annual 
campus-wide Student Academic Support Programs (SASP) Conference.
•  Work with SI Coordinator, Graduate Assistant for SI, & Senior Leaders to solve problems, check 
program progress, plan staff meetings, and supervise SI program.
•  Oversee budget for Supplemental Instruction program and Outreach programs.
•  Assist in and oversee compilation of statistical data (attendance, grades, GPAs) for local and 
national SI program reports, as well as departmental infographic reporting. Supervise creation and 
analysis of electronic surveys using Qualtrics.
•  Oversee, delegate, and schedule outreach programs and public relations events. Create new and 
update existing menu of instructional workshops.
•  Function as a member of SLAC professional staff team by attending meetings, providing 
consultation to students about unique academic needs, making referrals to appropriate resources, 
assisting with training programs for all SLAC staff, and promoting SLAC by speaking to classes and 
faculty/staff.
•  Serve on campus advisory committees as needed.
