Pre-Conference Sessions (February 18th)
SESSION 1: Winning Moves: Game-Based Tutor Training
Lynell Williams & Reece Reyes, South Texas College
Spend an active afternoon playing games with us. We’ll explore some of the best games we know for solidifying and exemplifying training concepts and discuss the principles behind their inclusion. We'll also address creation and adaptation of games to suit your training objectives. Do you have a favorite tutor training game? Come prepared to share it, too!
Participants will:
-
Experience tutor training games that they can apply in their own tutor training programs.
-
Connect games to pedagogical principles and brain science
-
Understand how to create and modify games for specific purposes
-
Leave with at least one new game to implement
-
Be up and moving around – so wear comfortable clothes and shoes.
SESSION 2: The Art of the Ask: Leading with Data, Diplomacy, Determination--and Duct Tape
Dr. Mary Catherine Breen, Texas A&M University
This session equips current and emerging learning center leaders with strategies to advocate for their programs during times of institutional constraint. Participants will explore how to align their messaging with administrative priorities while staying grounded in authentic leadership. Through case studies and interactive planning, attendees will learn to navigate conflict - such as budget cuts, space competition, and shifting priorities - without compromising their values. The session emphasizes data-informed storytelling, strategic communication, and leading with integrity to build trust and influence across campus.
Participants will leave with a clear understanding of how to frame their center’s value in terms that resonate with senior leadership. They will gain tools to lead through conflict, including strategies for addressing resource challenges and advocating for their teams. Attendees will develop a personalized advocacy plan, practice reframing their center’s impact using institutional language, and explore how to lead authentically in high-stakes conversations. The session will also provide templates and examples for data storytelling and conflict navigation.
